St. Vincent Told 'Song Exploder' Just How Much She Loves Swearing

"I get a lot of pleasure from saying 'fuck.'"

St. Vincent's most recent single "New York" is notable for a few reasons. Firstly, it's particularly low on the guitars we'd most often associate with the Official Best Guitarist in the Entire World™, and secondly, it contains the word 'motherfucker' in abundance. Everything accounted for, "New York" is basically a new direction for Annie Clark's beloved project (interestingly, she says she worked with Jack Antonoff on the song), but it's also most certainly a good one. To talk about the change in pace, she stopped by the Song Exploder podcast to break down all of the track's influences, and obviously also to talk about just how much she loves the word 'fuck':

"I get a lot of pleasure out of saying 'fuck.' […] I just like the idea of using, you know, really blue language as a term of endearment […] Motherfucker says like… I know you. Inside and out. […] And you know me!"

Elsewhere, she discusses the effect that David Bowie's death had on her, specifically causing her to write the line "I have lost a hero / I have lost a friend." Clark stated, "I was really affected. And I cried—I cried for somebody I didn't even know. And I don't know that I've done that before." Unfortunately, she gave no indication as to whether "New York" is the first of many new songs, but let's all cross our fingers and hope that this motherfucker is about to give us an album.
