Born in a Costa Rican basement the sound of In Swarm is dark, dense and intense.

Johann Rashid is stuck on one speed. Hyper. The Melbourne producer and musician, now based in New York, busies himself in musical projects including Home Travel, Eastlink and Promise Land, and shoots film for Parquet Courts and UV Race.

The last time we caught up with him he was in LA shooting the short film Vagabond starring Ariel Pink, and since then he’s made a surprise performance at Mexico’s Festival Nrmal on the back of shooting his next epic short film with Kirin J Callinan.

His latest musical project is In Swarm, a dark and claustrophobic sound that he formed in a Costa Rican basement with producer Frederico Gomez (S0N!KA) and his dark techno influence.

“Brittle Known", the track that we are premiering, was recorded at Navy Yards, the small Brooklyn basement studio run by Australian’s Angus Tarnawsky and Jaie Gon. The track features Danny Wood from hardcore band Sick Feeling. Yes, it’s intense.

“Our songs are built with a strong focus on drums and vocals. A basic aggressive structure with melody layered in after the fact,” explains Johann.

Brittle Known will be releasing the 7” single in the next few months and look out for a collaboration with Melbourne label GarbageTV.
