Dev Hynes Plays Charlotte Gainsbourg’s Lover in Her Dreamy New Video

This age-spanning story makes "Dead Valentine" look really really good.

As we know, there are two types of romantic love. The first being the kind you usually see in films, in which two people get together really quickly and then fuck it up in the same amount of time, with nothing to show for it other than old tagged photos and mutual disgust. The second is the slow-burning, long term kind of love that is harder to achieve, but ultimately, perhaps, more satisfying?

This new video from Charlotte Gainsbourg for her track "Dead Valentine" is about that second type of love, following two people from childhood, to teenagedom, to adulthood and into their elderly years. Dev Hynes plays Charlotte's lover, and I'm not gonna lie, the two of them make for a beautiful couple. There's a lot of effortless dancing, very stylish white outfits and the whole thing is shot in this dreamy, matte way that makes it look like it's always those hours just after dawn, aka the most magic-looking time of all.

"Each video [for the album Rest] came from personal, resonating ideas," Charlotte said in an interview with Dazed. "This song mixes wedding vows with an offbeat tone, so I wanted to express the idea of a lifetime engagement; A couple running to church, from childhood to old age, a lifetime path. I asked my friend, Dev Hynes, if he would accept to play my partner, and he very graciously did. It was fun finding his younger and older selves! For my part, I had all I needed at home (with their consent of course!) I nearly asked my mother but in the end, didn't dare…" Watch it all play out above.
