Shogun’s New Video For "Better Days" Is a Lo-Fi Ode to the Estate

This fits somewhere between an old grime visual and a 90s skate vid.

If you are a regular reader of Noisey dot com, you may remember us spending the day in Paisley with a then-19-year-old rising Scottish MC called Shogun, who gave us a tour of his local area and showed us round the "wee tin roofed semi detached gaff" that he shares with his mum.

Now, he's back with a video for "Better Days", which was directed by Emily McDonald, and shows the artist spitting bars around an estate in Thamesmead and hanging out beside the river. It's super grainy and lo-fi, occasionally fading into pixelated squares, which gives it a dreamy, stylish, almost nostalgic quality, like an old grime visual mixed with a 90s skate video. The track itself is contemplative, stripped back and sees Shogun rap in his characteristic rapid-fire, pitter patter flow.

"I first met Shogun when I went to Glasgow to film him for The Idris Takeover on BBC3. I documented his time for a few days, he was really friendly and spent a lot of the time I was there writing and smoking weed," McDonald told Noisey in an email. "We instantly clicked and stayed in touch, so when he called to to tell me that he'd be playing some shows in London I knew exactly where I wanted to take him. I knew that he'd appreciate the other worldly concrete landscape of Thamesmead.

"Shogun has a lot to say, he's one of the most interesting and articulate people that I've ever met," she continued, "which is what attracted me to his work and it's the reason that I look forward to working with him on future projects."

Anyway, we're premiering the video today, so check it out above.
