Ritual's "Josephine" Is Wintry Wonderful

Are you sweating too much right now? Do you wish the sun would chill out? Well this track smacks of chilly afternoons and pining like a motherfucker.

"Josephine, we can dance a little more," sing London-based trio Ritual. We like the cut of your jib, Ritual: one should always make an effort to shake a leg a smidge longer.

The lead single from their forthcoming EP—From the City to the Wilderness—is premiering above and it's a marvelously downtempo tune, all plaintive piano chords, xx-like muted guitars, shuffling beats, and a dreamy exchange between the Ritual frontman and Lisa Hannigan (a solo singer and frequent, early-years Damien Rice collaborator). It's beautifully unforced, elegant, and understated.

Of their EP, Ritual had this to say: “The title itself describes the atmosphere and backdrop on which we make our music. The noise and pollution of the city where we live, the constant roar of modernity set against a stillness—the quiet of an intact and natural environment. This has had a big influence on the songwriting—our voices and instruments coming up against our computers and the noise of machines, is an essential theme of R I T U A L.”

The band are keeping us in the dark about what they look like, in fact, we don't even know their names, but they came into our orbit not too long ago thanks for their collaboration with fellow Brit singer, Frances: "When it Comes to Us" is certainly the EP highlight. Keep your ears piqued for all to be revealed in the future.
