Shootings at Eagles of Death Metal Concert in Paris, Around 100 People Dead

As part of a series of shootings currently unfolding in Paris, hostages have been taken at Paris's Bataclan venue. The band Eagles of Death Metal were performing. French media and other sources are reporting that there are anywhere from 60 to 100 hostages held at the venue [UPDATE: Multiple sources are reporting that the hostage situation has been resolved, and the attack on Bataclan is over, with at least two attackers killed.]

French police have reported 15 people dead at the concert, as well as three at the Stade de France, where France was playing Germany in an international match [UPDATE: The overall death toll has now risen to around 100 at the Bataclan, according to police]. Eagles of Death Metal were scheduled to perform at Bataclan tonight. No word has been made on their current status. The above picture appears to be the most recent picture from inside the venue before the shooting.

One concertgoer reports that two man were shooting into the crowd with heavy weapons and that he (the spectator) had hid out before making it out to safety:

Another concertgoer described "numerous gunshots at Bataclan" and said that people were escaping via backstage. Additionally, there was a "large explosion" that shook the walls:

According to French media, another witness described the scene as "blood everywhere, they shot into the crowd with a shotgun":

UPDATE: Journalists on the scene are reporting anywhere from ten to 30 hostages have been released but that the scene remains otherwise mostly unchanged.

UPDATE 2: As noted by Brooklyn Vegan, French band Red Lemons, who were also on the night's bill, posted a message to Facebook suggesting that they and the members of EODM had gotten out of the venue to safety. They wrote in French, "to reassure the people who knew we were at the Eagles of Death Metal concert at the Batclan, there was an attack, and we are doing well." They added, in English, "For our american and english friends, a terrorist attack happened at the Eagles of death metal concert. We are safe. Mikel Ross, Eric McFadden we were with your mates Jesse, Tuesday, the other musicians outside, they're safe too, they took a cab. Fuck…"

UPDATE 3: The Washington Post reports that the band is safe, according to Mary Lou Dorio, mother of drummer Julian Dorio:

She said she spoke to her son’s wife, who said that the band members had managed to flee the concert hall when the attack began. The fate of several crew members remains unknown, she said.

“It was awful,” his mother said. She added that her son was at a local police station, where he was able to call his wife. He had left his phone on stage.

UPDATE 4: One escaped hostage reportedly described the captors as executing hostages one-by-one. French media reports a police column entering the theater and "lots of stretchers" coming out:

UPDATE 6: A Europe 1 journalist who was inside the concert hall described the attack in more detail, saying that two or three unmasked individuals came in with Kalashnikov-style automatic rifles and started firing blindly on the crowd, which lasted for ten or 15 minutes. "It was extremely violent, and there was a wave of panic, everyone ran toward the stage, there was trampling, even I was trampled," he added, saying it was every man for himself, with lots of people injured by bullets. The assailants were able to reload at least three times, he said.

UPDATE 8: France Info radio and Le Monde are reporting that the attack on the Bataclan is now over, with two terrorists killed. Reporters on the scene are describing people being evacuated from the theater on ladders, with multiple ambulences on site.

UPDATE 12: The Bataclan venue has made its first statement since the attack last Friday, urging people not to assemble in front of the venue before authorities have properly handled the scene. They write, "No words suffice to express the magnitude of our grief. Our thoughts go to the victims, to the wounded, and to their loved ones. Many of you have wanted to gather in remembrance at the Bataclan. Unfortunately, the authorities still need to work at the site. We will keep you informed about when it will be possible to assemble in front of the hall. We thank you for your support, which touches us profoundly." (via NYT)
