Daniel Lanois Remixed Tinariwen's "Adounia Ti Chidjret" in the Back of a Car

Tinariwen are the greatest rock and roll outfit on the planet, and Daniel Lanois was principal producer of U2’s good album, so collaboration between the two is no small deal.

Tinariwen are the greatest rock and roll outfit on the planet, and Daniel Lanois was principal producer of U2’s good album (gonna cut down on the hate mail and leave that one open), so collaboration between the two is no small deal.

Remixed in the back of a 1972 Fleetwood Brougham because “we all listen to music in our cars” Lanois takes “Adounia Ti Chidjret” (off of “desert blues” stalwarts Tinariwen’s excellent current album, Emaarr) and its already loping groove to new heights (or lows. Whatever, it works). Lanois has, over the last 30 years, proven himself ambient (the not sucky kind) soundscapes while never losing sight of the value of, you know, actual songs. His take on “Adounia Ti Chidrat” does not fuck with the loveliness of the initial piece a bit but rather expands and deepens it.

The accompanying video is so peak 1990s that I want to throw it a Desert Storm parade. Using God’s gift to videographers, the fishbowl lens, it documents Lanois remixing the Tinariwen song from the back seat of a sweet, sweet luxury ride, while his boho-alt pals cheer him on. It’s basically the “Ironic” video with a car full of Chris Goss-es. Which, if that hasn't been a reoccurring fever dream of yours since you were a child, your loss. Basically it’s amazing. Bless all those involved for letting Noisey premiere it.

Both the song and video are in anticipation of the much anticipated live collaboration among Tinariwen, Lanois, and The Antlers. The event is called “Ant-Thesis” and will be a celebration of “body music” and the immediate and visceral magic that can happen when artists at their best, even if supposedly from disparate genres, get together. It’s being held Monday November 10 at the Brooklyn Masonic Temple.
