Insult to Injury: Week Ending 5/16
Here's what the Noisey editors were listening to this week while getting into deep Coldplay discussions.
Welcome to Insult to Injury. Do you like music? Do you like opinions? Do you like brief stories that typically go nowhere? Man, have you come to the right place! Also, do you like Ryan Seacrest? Do you like Chris Martin of the rock band Coldplay? Well then check out that sweet picture above. They are two inspirational men, captured in one beautiful photo. God bless.
Here's what we were listening to this week...
This week I spent some time in Seattle. It was uncommonly sunny. I loitered around the Sub Pop offices. I watched La Luz rehearse and afterwards, over beers, an old man magician blew our minds at a bar called Twilight Exit. I went to Linda's, the last bar where Kurt was seen alive. I ate a lot of tater tots. I also spent some time with Tacocat. Their songs are punky and poppy and in your face, and they cover subjects like UTIs ("Thought I had to pee/That was a lie") and leotards as chastity belts "Leotard." That was on their first record. Tacocat's second album, NVM—lately released on Sub Pop sister label Hardly Art—is a bit more polished but no less infectious. Or angsty. Songs like "Crimson Wave" (yup) and "Psychedelic Quinceañera" (about dropping LSD as you turn 15) are hooky, cheeky, and fucking fun.
Lagwagon - "May 16"
Happy Lagwagon Day.
Kuhrye-oo - "Air Days feat. Evy Jane"
Summer is coming, and, even if I generally get really sweaty, summer is the best season because it's sunny until late and you can drink beer outside and sit in parks and go on boats and stuff. Basically, summer makes you happy. This song, also, makes me happy. It is endlessly pleasant, and I hope I listen to it on a lot of pensive train rides to the beach or something. I already have been listening to it on an constant loop: I'm not exaggerating at all that I listened to it like 15 times in a row yesterday without really realizing it because it's just a nonstop pleasure ride of light, bouncy, beautiful, airy vocals. Wow, this summer, like all summers, is going to be the best.
Tink/Jeremih - "Don’t Tell Nobody"
Jeremih is going to own the summer of 2014. After being held captive for the past few years, the caged bird with keyboard tattoos on its wings can finally croon. In the span of a week, Jeremih released this banger with Tink, then another collaboration with Shlomo, and then a formulaic summer jam with DJ Mustard and YG that was designed in a Def Jam boardroom. Of all of these offering, the one with Tink is the one that’s getting the most play. It may not be as shiny as "Don’t Tell Them" or as dense as “No More,” but it’s still the best of the three. Late Nights With Jeremih was the best R&B project to come out since Usher, so who wouldn’t want more? Seriously, who can we blame?
Cam'ron x A-Trak - "Dipshits"
I'm going to the beach this weekend even though it's kinda cold and am super fucking amped because there is a new Cam'ron song and I'm going to listen to it on repeat while I shamelessly wear boat shoes. That's all. Cam'ron is so awesome and this song makes me so happy.
Sleep - Dopesmoker
Today I did something that I do a couple times a year, but this time without drugs or alcohol or any sort of stimulants of any kind. Yes, no weed. I don't give a fuck if you don't believe me, I totally did it. The whole fucking thing. Guess what, it still ruled.
Chinx - Cocaine Riot 4
I love Chinx a lot, especially because he thought that by dropping the "Drugs" from his name he'd somehow become more accessible. That's not true, but his new mixtape is a good soundtrack for fighting some dude on the subway in slow-motion because he looked at you wrong.
