Listen to Eyedress's Warped and Wonderful LP 'Shapeshifter'

It's somewhat appropriate that Eyedress, a.k.a. Idris Vicuña, has called his debut album Shapeshifter. He's a tough man to pin down. Just the other day we premiered his recent video for "Where My Girl At?"—calling it a woozy, MS-DOS slow jam, but back in 2013 when we first fell for the Manila based singer, his sound, as on the Supernatural EP, was bedroom synth-pop with layers of girl-ish vocals over fretwork delicate as a bunch of pixies dancing on a daisy (listen to "Nature Trips").

Born in Manila, Eyedress spent some time in Southern California in his teens, plus a stint in London (when he was signed to XL Recordings) before heading back to Manila where this album really started to take shape.The record kicks off with melancholy horns and a doomy kind of rap courtesy of Edgar the Breathtaker a.k.a. King Krule, before seguing into 19 more tracks of atmospheric strangeness—everything from shoegaze goodness and canned beats, to minimalist, lo-fi, lounge-pop, to R&B. There are soft focus love songs tucked in here too—check out the video for "Secret Agent on Vacation" featuring Chris McCombs for evidence—it's also premiering below. Much like the "Where My Girl At?" video, Eyedress is stranded and multiplied (did he survive a plane crash with his guitar intact?!) but at least there's a giant bong nearby.

The record is sprawling, genre-agnostic, inventive, and strange with some unusual guest spots. Some you'll have heard of like the aforementioned King Krule, and Sporting Life from Ratking with rapper ThisIsDa on the tune "Sports," others less so, like Jiin (a Canadian of Korean descent) and Pyramid Vritra and his friend Tyler Major who are based in LA. The vibe is very international and of course it's all thanks to the internet. Stems and ideas traded, with Eyedress playing, recording, producing, and stitching it all together in his Manila bedroom.

Eyedress: "I wanted to collaborate with my friends in Manila to showcase that there are good artists doing cool things here and not just the normal commercial crap everyone here is into. As for my collaborations with everyone not in Manila they just happened naturally by staying in touch via the internet.

"I think this album was a lot more positive and happy compared to my previous releases due to new life circumstances like not being with a record label gave me freedom and autonomy over my work and that was probably the best feeling knowing this."
