PREMIERE: Listen to Hot Nerds' “The Brubeck Counting Institute”

Plus watch their video for the title track from their upcoming album, 'Strategically Placed Bananas.'

As an improbably attractive nerd myself, I’ve always been drawn to the band Hot Nerds. Seriously, if nose hair, head crust, and paunch are your things; I’m like a 15. Hot Nerds are also a 15 but like, in comeliness of music. Or I guess, using Dungeons and Dragons metrics, they’re an 18? Art really is so hard to quantify.

Hot Nerds (Alia Jyawook, Nathan Joyner, and Thomas F O’connell on drums) are part of a proud San Diego tradition of completely wild and utterly unabashed spazzitude. From All Leather (of which they share members) to Plot To Blow Up The Eiffel Tower to Moving Units to (not from SD but mainstays on San Diego’s premier freak hardcore and dentist drill vocals over syncopated hi-hat label, Three One G) Doomsday Student, the California city that isn’t San Francisco or Los Angeles produces a steady stream of weirdoes with tight haircuts who can be depended on to make the most solid as fuck art damaged dance music in the nation. Hot Nerds may or may not do what they do out of civic responsibility but they do their town very proud all the same.

The new Hot Nerds album, Strategically Placed Bananas (and, yes, their Facebook page is pretty dominated now by pictures of bananas everywhere), is a ten-song collection of synth, skronk, and spite; perfect for staring angrily at a dance floor full of pretty people and twitching resentfully against the wall. Hot Nerds were nice enough to let Noisey premier the rad as fuck song “The Brubeck Counting Institute” and also their promo video for the album in which bananas figure heavily.

Strategically Placed Bananas will be out early 2015 on 31G (you can spell it both ways if you’re nasty)
