RIP Scott Asheton, Drummer of The Stooges

Founding member was 64 years old.

Bad news: According to a note that Iggy Pop posted on his Facebook, Stooges drummer and founding member Scott Asheton (pictured right) died last night. As he writes:

IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM IGGY:
My dear friend Scott Asheton passed away last night.

Scott was a great artist, I have never heard anyone play the drums with more meaning than Scott Asheton. He was like my brother. He and Ron have left a huge legacy to the world. The Asheton's have always been and continue to be a second family to me.

My thoughts are with his sister Kathy, his wife Liz and his daughter Leanna, who was the light of his life.

Iggy Pop

Long considered proto-punk pioneers, The Stooges were formed in 1967 by Scott, brother Ron (guitar), Iggy, and Dave Alexander (bass). They put out three seminal albums, then broke up for nearly 30 years before reforming in 2003 to tour and release new albums. Ron passed away from a heart attack in 2009, and after suffering a stroke in 2011, Scott took a break from touring. Just last week, an article on Rolling Stone cited his potential full-time return to the band as up in the air, given the constraints of going on the road.

He is survived by his wife Liz, his daughter Leanna, and his sister Kathy.
