Don’t Be Surprised If Beach Boys Play Trump’s Inauguration

A representative says they’re mulling it over. Mike Love is exactly this kind of guy.

Donald Trump, a misogynist and idol of white supremacists, has been struggling to book artists for his own inauguration on January 20. So far, he's managed to rope in a one-time winner of America's Got Talent and The Rockettes, a number of whom will be forced to perform against their will. Even if he does manage to book Post Malone and Riff Raff, it seems the inauguration will be a fine reflection of Trump himself: superficial, devoid of talent, and ultimately grotesque.

This won't really change if Beach Boys decide to perform, a proposition that seems all but inevitable now. A spokesperson confirmed to Billboard yesterday that the legendary group, without auteur Brian Wilson, are mulling over an invitation from Trump: "The Beach Boys have been asked to perform as part of the inauguration festivities. But no decision has been made at this point as to how or whether they will participate. We will let you know as soon as a decision is final."

It's no surprise that the Wilson-less Beach Boys would sign up for such a debacle. Mike Love and the blubbering wreck we're faced with as president-elect happen to be good friends, a sure sign that the man is kind of an asshole. Like so many old white dudes, his long-time support of the Republican Party has now tipped over into active help for a flat-out racist.

So don't be shocked when Beach Boys end up playing the inauguration. And don't pretend that it's a big deal, either. Without Brian Wilson, who remains oddly transcendent, they're a cruise ship variety show bundled up in toxic nostalgia.

And don't ever let this tarnish one of the greatest Christmas albums of all time. Go inside and warm up. It's about to get awful cold outside.
