Largely ignored by hip-hop's mainstream until perhaps a decade ago, Houston's hip-hop scene is an insular one that in many ways emerged sui generis—informed equally by car culture, a DIY mentality, and a love of all things slow, Houston rap can often sound like nothing else out there.
