Hear Joey Bada$$ Lay Down Some Home Truths on New Track “Land of the Free”

"Obama just wasn't enough, I need some more closure / And Donald Trump is not equipped to take this country over."
Lauren O'Neill
London, GB

Just in time for inauguration day (and his birthday, what a bust) Brooklyn emcee Joey Bada$$ has released the first track from his upcoming album AABA, and we can pretty much treat it as a state-of-the-nation (and the world) prophecy. "Land of the Free," released via Soundcloud, addresses the landscape of injustice that still exists in the US, and looks to get even starker with a Republican Senate and House majority as Mr Trump ascends to the White House. Over a throwback beat, Bada$$ interrogates the glaring class discrepancies ("the land of the free is for the free loaders") and racial divides ("still got the last names of our slave owners") in the country. Though there's no official word on a release date for AABA, it's certainly coming later this year. We can only hope that the rest of the tracks offer social commentary as sharp and stylish as this.
