Dimensions Festival Was a Beautiful Washout

Thunderstorms? Who cares when you have pills and a whole load of techno.

An amphitheatre, a castle, a moat and a whole truckload of techno… it's Dimensions festival 2017! The five-day party took over its usual remote spot in an abandoned Roman fort and beach in Stinjan, which pokes its coastline out into the Adriatic Sea on Croatia's Istrian Peninsula. Geography lesson aside, these are the basics: sea, electronic music of just about every variety and more people Insta Storying their way through the festival's most photogenic areas than you'd even want to imagine. Well, normally.

Usually blessed with sunshine and heat waves, this year's bash was slightly tainted by daily thunderstorms and torrential rain – not exactly the greatest accompaniment to having necked three pills on a beach at 4PM, but maybe refreshing?! Who knows. What we are sure on is that the likes of Gilles Peterson, Joy Orbison, Ben UFO, Pearson Sound, Marcel Dettman – all of the untz-untz-untz lads, really – took to stages at some point across the weekend alongside, y'know, Grace Jones, the literal queen of the dance.

By the time BBC Weather hopefully forecast Sunday 3 September as the one day that wouldn't be struck by lightning storms, we all let our optimism take over. This was the last day, after all. People stripped back off to their bikinis and swimming trunks for the daily beach party, sipping blue cocktails served in novelty unicorn inflatables (of course). It didn't last. But even though it pissed it down, this stands out as one of those festivals that really nails the sound (when you can brave the weather to hear it). Look on below as we return home with the only photos we managed to salvage from this Croatian voyage.
