Azealia Banks made her first appearance on The Breakfast Club this morning, clarifying many of the controversial comments that have followed her throughout her career. Long before Kanye West showed his support for Donald Trump, Banks did, and her commentary Zayn Malik didn't generate a ton of public support when it came time to promote her music. In an interview with The Breakfast Club, Banks says she was blacklisted because "she probably pissed off the wrong people." She went on to compare the controversy that surrounds her to Kanye's, but says gender changes the way people receive it. "[A woman] gets attacked more on more so many levels where it's not just about her character. It's like about her femininity. They'll be like she's an unfit woman."

In the interview, she addressed her comments about why she called Cardi B an "illiterate untalented rat."

I feel like the conversation surrounding black women's culture maybe two years ago was reaching an all-time high. We were really discussing our power amongst ourselves. Beyoncé came out with Lemonade and there was just this really intelligent conversation going on nationally. And then there was just like Cardi B. I'm just talking about this caricature of black women, that black women themselves would never be able to get away with. Like if if my spelling and grammar were that bad… I'd be cancelled. If Nicki Minaj spelled like that, we'd be ragging on her all day.

Banks also expressed her feelings about the 2016 incident where she was spit on by Russell Crowe and RZA watched.

If RZA was smart he should have just shut the fuck up…We have a movie to promote. Who’s gonna wanna see a movie in which the director has slandered the lead actress? Like, what the fuck are you thinking?

Last month, Banks alleged on a now-deleted Instagram Story that she'd been sexually assaulted.

Banks: I got GHB’d at a bar. I was staying at a hotel because I was doing press…I was just drinking and some guy came over and started buying me drinks.

Envy: White guy?

Banks: Of course…I highly doubt a black guy would drug me. Maybe he would. I don’t fucking know…so white guy comes up. I’m already tipsy and he’s just buying me drinks. And I guess between then and there he dropped something into my drink. We get upstairs to the room and we’re drinking some more…So I keep trying to kick this guy out but he keeps sticking his tongue in my ass…And every time I tried to kick him out, he just went and started eating my ass…When someone’s tongue is in your butt, what the fuck are you going to do?…and one thing led to another and things just—I just started getting heavy. My body just started getting heavy and I realized something was wrong. And I just started screaming and I kind of stumbled and kicked him out. And then I fucking collapsed on the bed. And cried. Once I realized that I was on drugs that I didn’t know I was on. I never felt anything like that.

Sitting on The Breakfast Club Azealia Banks seems to have matured since the moments that people won't let escape her. She's holding herself accountable for her actions, but is also not shying away from her opinions. You don't have to agree with her, but her lived experience colors the way she feels about the industry, and it's not fair to invalidate that. Watch the rest of the interview above.
