Father John Misty, Bearded Ouroboros, Finally Consumes Self With "Leaving LA"

“These L.A. phonies and their Pitchfork bands that sound like dollar signs and Amy Grant."

Singer/songwriter/part-time metahumourist Father John Misty is continuing his promo campaign for upcoming album Pure Comedy with yet another new song. Premiered in a solo live performance on BBC Radio 6, "Leaving LA" is a 13-minute-long folk epic in the tradition of Neil Young's "Ambulance Blues" that sees FJM reaching new levels of self-reference as he reflects on what it's like to be at his level of fame, among other things.

With references to Pitchfork, magazine covers and being a white musician in the year 2017, FJM continues putting what are essentially rap lyrics to D-standard-tuned acoustic songs. While it's up to the individual listener to determine whether FJM succeeds in his ambition or not, we'll have to see if the album version of "Leaving LA" slaps as hard as Bran Van 3000's deathless "Drinking in LA" or the obscure soft rock heater which shares the same name as FJM's song. Listen to the 2017 "Leaving LA" here.
