Bruce Springsteen paused his scripted Broadway show last night to denounce the "inhumane" policies that have seen children forcibly separated from their families at the US-Mexico border.The Guardian reports that Springsteen castigated the Republican lawmakers who instituted the policies. "For 146 shows, I have played pretty much the same set every night," Springsteen said. "Tonight demands something different." He reportedly told the crowd that recent comments made by "senior people in government" had amounted to blasphemy—possibly a reference to Attorney General Jeff Sessions's statement that the Bible justifies the forced separations. Springsteen then played "The Ghost of Tom Joad," a song inspired by social activism and John Steinbeck's 1939 novel The Grapes of Wrath.More than 2,000 children have been separated from their parents after crossing the border since early May, according to the Department of Homeland Security, and news outlets have reported that many of those children are being held in cages inside detention centers. Federal defenders have said that some mothers are being told their children are being taken away for a bath, only to find later that they are being detained elsewhere for an unknown length of time.Follow Alex Robert Ross on Twitter.
