Chris Brown, who was arrested on February 8, 2009 for brutally assaulting his then-girlfriend Rihanna in a vehicle, has been nominated for the 2015 Grammy Awards in the category of Best Urban Contemporary Album for his record X.

Brown, who, according to the police report documenting the attack, was sent into a rage following Rihanna discovering a long text message from a woman with whom he had a previous sexual relationship that began with Brown unsuccessfully trying to force her out of his vehicle and ended with him repeatedly punching Rihanna, biting her on the hands and ears, and slamming her forehead into the dashboard all while continuing to drive his vehicle and preventing her escape, has the potential to be honored for his contributions to music and culture alongside Pharrell, Mali Music, Jhené Aiko, and Beyoncé.

Following the Grammy nomination (his 12th, including one win in 2011, two years after the assault, which left his then-girlfriend's blood splattered in his vehicle), Brown joins a prestigious group of men who, despite public instances of domestic assault, still have flourishing careers and public lives. This group includes Charlie Sheen, who following pinning his wife down and holding a knife to his wife's throat, was roasted on Comedy Central and given his own sitcom; Sean Penn, who is one of the most respected political figures in the Hollywood liberal elite despite his arrest for domestic assault against his then-wife Madonna in 1989; and Yanni, who was charged with domestic violence in 2006 and will soon be one of the first western performers to give a concert in Iran.

Noisey will continue to periodically provide reminders that while Brown—who has shown a glaring lack of remorse for his actions and is to this day prone to violent, public outbursts—is indeed talented and sometimes makes extremely catchy music, also domestically assaulted a woman in 2009.
