Chance the Rapper Brings More Romance to New Francis and the Lights Remix

The "May I Have This Dance" remix features a verse from Chance and the accompanying video calls back to last year's "Friends."

Chance the Rapper's verse on Francis and the Lights' new remix for Farewell, Starlite cut "May I Have This Dance" is about as sweet and wholesome as it can be. "You've got your, your mother's eyes / You've got your, your grandmother's ring / You've got your daddy's discernment," Chance sings, slowly, before picking his pace up and falling into a rhythm: "One, two, one, two, always on beat / You must have been born with two right feet / I know you've been looking for something concrete / You must have been born with two right feet." He's still set on praise, but he's not rapturous like he was on Coloring Book's most gospel-heavy tracks. He's a little mournful, a little sorry that the person he loves won't get it. "I love you more than your mother / More than you love yourself." It helps that Francis Farewell, Starlite's original cut was a soft, classically romantic piece in the first place; Chance's melancholy gives it a neccesary edge.

The video for the track—released this afternoon, a few hours after the remix first surfaced—has Chance dancing in bursts in an empty room before being joined by Starlite for the finale. It's directed by frequent Starlite collaborator (and one-time Francis and the Lights member) Jake Schreier. It's a response to another last Schreier-directed Francis and the Lights video, 2016's "Friends," in which Kanye West and Bon Iver's Justin Vernon danced through the white room. Again, it's a single-shot video that relies more on gentle interpretation than bold statements. Watch that above.
