New Mystics Pulls Back the Curtain on Addiction in the Video for "Modern"

Watch the second in the series from Other Lives's Josh Onstott, whose debut album is due out August 18.

New Mystics, the new LA-based side project from Other Lives's Josh Onstott, has been quietly kicking around since late last year, releasing a couple of stirring, richly orchestrated singles that expand the Oklahoma band's sound into full-blown escapism.

That theme is what drives the trio of videos Onstott has created in tandem with New Mystics's songs. Each video stars the same young boy, exploring facets of escapism in different settings (themed "city," "desert," and "water") and contexts of the stark realities in which we often find ourselves trapped, from relationships to addiction to political strife.

The video for "Modern," premiering on Noisey below, is the second in the series. It's a beautiful and often uncomfortable autobiographical work taken from Onstott's childhood spent with an addict mother who futilely struggled to conceal her habit. The track's marching drum beat, piano crescendos, and quiet-release dynamics make for a fitting soundtrack as we follow our main character into an alternate reality while the family's desperate facade of normalcy crumbles around him.

Watch the premiere of the Dan Huiting-directed video below, and look out for New Mystics's debut album, the fittingly titled Smile With Your Teeth, out August 18.
