Begetter of Life, Deliverer of Death: Here's Kidä's "Bone Mother"

Never underestimate the power of the woman.

Here's your Kidä crib sheet: All you need to know about this NYC-born, LA-based singer.

1. She dropped her first single, "Snakes" last month—a captivating cut of liquid R&B-pop.

2.  Kidä is Egyptian-Italian and a former back up singer for Pharrell and Carly Simon.

3. Although she's only 20, her upbringing's been itinerant and varied: alongside LA and NYC, she also graduated from the Red Bull Music Academy in Montreal and spent a stint in studying landscape architecture. Quite the 180 but it turns out music was too much of a lure.

4. She counts Aaliyah, D'Angelo, Ravi Shankar, and West African musician Ballake Sissoko as some of her most formative influences.

5. "Bone Mother"—premiering below—is the second track off her forthcoming debut EP, out via LA label Tireless in early 2017. It's an eerie composition, less traditional than "Snakes"—a creeping, slyly percussive song, where Kida's plush tones come off like spectral incantations, which makes all the more sense when you hear what Kidä has to say about the song: "There is an old folklore tale originating from Northern Mexico that tells the story of La Loba—a wild woman who lives in the desert and collects old bones. She is known to collect and preserve especially that which is in danger of being lost to the world. Her cave is filled with the bones of desert creatures: the deer, the rattlesnake, the crow… but her speciality is said to be wolves. She resurrects the wild spirit of life from the depths of the underworld through singing.

"This archetype exists across many different cultures and beliefs; Kali in Hinduism, the Bone Mother in Celtic tradition, Osiris in Ancient Egypt. The Bone Mother represents both death and the fertility of life. She is the begetter of life, deliverer of death, source of rebirth, highly in tune with the order of nature and it's cycles —just like all women. Just some #freakbitchshit for ya mind 1 time."
