A Year of Lil Wayne: "Hands Up (My Last)"

Some Lil Wayne Easy Listening for college bowl season.

Day 99: "Hands Up (My Last)" – Sorry 4 The Wait, 2011

It's that time of year again: college football bowl season. I'm sure Lil Wayne, avid sports lover, is following it closely. In honor of the winter tradition, the bar for today is "breaking down buds the size of a football," from Wayne's Sorry 4 The Wait freestyle over Big Sean and Chris Brown's "My Last."

This is about as low stakes a Wayne song as you'll find anywhere; I'd put it in a genre of Weezy I just made up called Lil Wayne Easy Listening. But, lest we ever forget how popular Lil Wayne is, consider that this song, a random cut from a lesser mixtape, has over 6 million plays just on the first YouTube link of it. Pretty insane! There's plenty to enjoy, and the source material, to which Wayne is pretty loyal, is already a hit, so it's pleasant to listen to (maybe even better than the original). You get a few good quips to live by, such as "Let's get fucked up / On the road to riches you just a speed bump" and "We smoke a tree down til it's just a tree stump." There's the rather brilliant epithet of head as "Einstein" and a good punchline about a genie in a bottle granting a death wish. And finally, check out a prime entry into the canon of things the F in Weezy F Baby stands for: "forget it."

This is a relatively quiet time of year, in between Christmas and New Year's, so what better time to put on a song like this and talk about football?
