Want to Cry? Here's Jason Isbell's New Song "If We Were Vampires"

Call out sick and call someone you love.

Fact: Jason Isbell writes good, devastating songs. Take, for example, Southeastern's "Cover Me Up" or "Elephant," or Something More Than Free's "24 Frames" and "Speed Trap Town." Another fact: Isbell's upcoming album The Nashville Sound includes includes another devastating song, "If We Were Vampires," which premiered today over at NPR. Sung with wife Amanda Shires, Isbell reckons with the fact that try as he might, he's not going to live forever, and neither will the love of his life. "Maybe we'll get 40 years together" they sing, putting in perspective just how little time the world gives us to enjoy the presence of our loved ones. "Maybe time running out is a gift/ I'll work hard to the end of my shift" Isbell continues. It's a sweet, if not utterly devastating song.
