Listen to the First Song from Cayetana's Long-Awaited Debut, 'Nervous Like Me'
Serious things are stupid.
Cayetana have done a whole lot with a whole little. In 2012, the Philadelphia three-piece released a three-song demo, followed by a seven-inch last year. With only four songs in their arsenal, the band was able to make enough of a buzz to get themselves on tours with Waxahatchee and everyone’s favorite Scranton-boys-done-good, the Menzingers. Now, on the release of their debut full-length Nervous Like Me, it’s put up or shut up time for Cayetana and they damn well do not shut up. The album matches expectations and then some.
In keeping with their “making something out of nothing” appeal, Cayetana keep it light and simple on Nervous Like Me, giving off the feel of a band who is still mastering their instruments and finding their identity on the fly. But what Cayetana lack in overly complex musicality, they make up for in character and a total lack of gravity, as perfectly demonstrated on the album’s opener, “Serious Things Are Stupid.” Right from the song's first seconds, singer/guitarist Augusta Koch gives you an immediate crash course in her voice, with a raggedy and distinct delivery that cracks and squeals its way through these 11 songs. The woman could read the menu at Papa John’s and still make it sound fun with a hint of raw emotion. Or, to borrow from the internet parlance of our time, she will give you all of the feels.
So after skating on nothing but four songs and a whole lot of charm for nearly two years, Cayetana have stepped up and turned their momentum into one of the best releases of the year. Totally worth the wait.
