The Best Rap Tunes of the Week: Grilled Cheeze, Vol. 7

Meet the horribly named Ray Jr., vibe out with Jet Life, and turn up with Atlanta weirdo Zuse in this week's mix of dope rap.

Grilled Cheeze is a weekly mix from Skinny Friedman of some of the best new rap songs to hit the airwaves/streets/internetwaves. Send tracks to ayo.grilled.cheeze@gmail.com and follow GRILLED CHEEZE on Soundcloud!

Tunji Ige f/ Wonda - "Day2Day"
Drake-inspired rap from a Philly 19 year old. The beat (which hits!) sounds like a nicer version of "Rich As Fuck."

Fly Union - "Don't Give Me A Reason"
Fly Union has the misfortune of making LA sunglasses rap in the vein of Casey Veggies and Dom Kennedy, except in less sunny Columbus, Ohio. They've been striving for a minute, but they still sound fresh. Hopefully with their optimistically named Small Victories tape, they'll make a long-deserved leap.

DVS f/ Bill Ding - "Editgod"
Queens MC, Twitter genius, and generally hilarious person DVS is having a well-deserved moment in the sun with his Mutant League tape, a compilation of his guest verses. Give him your money because you do not know what to do with it.

Curren$y f/ Trademark - "Coolie In The Cut"
Yeah, this track is nowhere near new, but I'm really on my Jet Life shit lately because it's summer, and I need those vibes right now.

Zuse f/ Strap of Travis Porter - "Shooter"
Zuse is one to watch in Atlanta right now. The native Jamaican rolls with the extremely underrated FKi crew and hovers in the zone of controlled demolition you would expect the Young Thug meets patois combination to produce. I still can't name all three members of Travis Porter.

Makonnen - "I Don't Sell Molly No More (Skinny Friedman blend)"
The a capella for Makonnen's sort-of single is floating around, so I laid it over Lil Scrappy's "Money In The Bank".

Josie Stingray - "Bitches Know"
The female member of the reliable (but recently pretty quiet) Honor Roll crew lets loose with a little venom.

Mouse on the Track - "Ain't Gon Stress"
Baton Rouge's best producer (he did pretty much every Boosie song you know) has long-since been a force on the mic as well. Airtime isn't his strongest work, mostly because it sounds cheap (especially compared to his usually crispy engineering, but it's still fun and worth a listen.

Tray Pizzy - "Oh No"
I found BX-reppin Pizzy after the video for "My Borough" got some burn last week. His whole Truman Show tape is pretty sharp. "Oh No" is vaguely on some 1999 Juvenile shit. Like 5 percent. Still a good look.

Ray Jr. - "Same Crew"
Cleveland's Ray Jr. has one of the worst rap names because it looks like a misspelling of "Ray J" or a bootleg version of Carl's Jr. But he's one of a grip of rappers in Cleveland grinding away waiting for the city to get its due. Hmm.

Skinny Friedman has the club going up on a Wednesday. He's on Twitter - @skinny412
