As a teenager growing up in Northern Virginia, Will Toledo began his music career by recording in his family car and uploading his rambling, lo-fi songs to Bandcamp. He's put out 11 albums of material as Car Seat Headrest via the site, and now he's ready to upgrade: He moved to Seattle last year and signed a deal with Matador, who will be releasing a retrospective project of full band versions of his songs called Teens of Style.

"Something Soon" is the first of these: Where the original sounded like Toledo was recording in a stairwell that he'd just thrown all his instruments down, the new version is a tight piece of fully fledged, guitar-driven power pop. What's unchanged is Toledo's sharp songwriting, which perfectly captures the frustration of feeling trapped in your current circumstances: "I want to romanticize my headfuck" Toledo sings at one point, more or less offering a mission statement for his music. It's moody but pointed.

The video, filmed on Seattle-adjacent Bainbridge Island and directed by Jason Reid, plays into that anxious energy. "The gang find a spooky abandoned house and Will dies" is how it's eloquently described on YouTube. Teens of Style, is out October 30, and a follow-up project of new material called Teens of Denial is due next spring. The band is heading on tour this fall.
