Vampire Hunters, Cannibals, and Dogs’ Assholes: It Must Be a New Song from Andrew Jackson Jihad

Listen to the first track off the Arizona folk-punk weirdos’ upcoming album ‘Christmas Island’.

Andrew Jackson Jihad have a way with words. That’s pretty obvious from their near endless catalog of songs like "The Michael Jordan of Drunk Driving" and "Love in the Time of Human Papillomavirus". But on their new album, Christmas Island, the Phoenix folk-punk weirdos seem intent on upping their eccentric lyric game. The album covers topics like Man Is The Bastard, rocking out in your dreams, and Linda Ronstadt. But “Children of God” in particular is a jaw-dropper. In only two minutes, the song not only captures everything that’s great about the album, but serves as a microcosm for the brilliant absurdity that is Andrew Jackson Jihad—just the right mixture of poetic wit and tongue-in-cheek humor. But in case you’re just looking for music to simply put on in the background while you go about your day, AJJ do not give you the opportunity. Some lines will stop you dead in your tracks while you reach for the rewind button and think, “Did I just hear that correctly?” The obvious example is: “At the corner of my eye, coming out from the teeth-filled sky with eyes as red as a dog’s asshole when you see it shitting.” Wow, what? [presses rewind button]

The band is currently wrapping up a European tour with Frank Turner. Christmas Island is out on May 6 from SideOneDummy. Pick it up here. It has album of the year written all over it. Oh, and remember how I mentioned that one of the songs is about rocking out in your dreams? Well, you can pre-order the album and get an AJJ Snuggie and sleep mask that says “I wanna rock out in my dreams.” Listen to “Children of God” below and check out that album cover which is…um, appropriate.
