Third Eye Blind’s Ex-Guitarist Says Liam Gallagher Once ‘Threatened to Stab Him’

Hey, it was the 90s!

You guys, did you know that 2017 marks the 20th anniversary of seminal American rock album Third Eye Blind by the band Third Eye Blind? Well, it is, and in case you're not familiar (um weird, but OK), you have it to thank for this:

Twenty years of "Semi Charmed Life." What a world. Anyway, to celebrate the milestone reached by the 1997 release, writer Gil Kaufman put together an oral history of the album for Billboard. And yeah, though it's definitely interesting to hear about the making of a record that soundtracked such a specific time for America's youth, it's also the case that this definitely isn't the best takeaway from the piece.

That accolade goes to the revelation made by founding Third Eye Blind member and former guitarist Kevin Cadogan, that, in a roundabout way, Oasis' Liam Gallagher once threatened to stab him. Because Kevin threw a Coke can near Liam's head. In Kevin's own words:

That was a really cool move to get us that opening gig in San Francisco. It was pretty ballsy. It was just incredible. I got threatened by Oasis singer Liam Gallagher that night with physical violence. I was drinking a can of Coke and had finished it and crumpled it up and was going to throw it, basketball-style, 20 yards away. The can hit someone who was in the corner – I just saw this glowing ash and the can rolled over to it. After the show he said, "You could have gotten stabbed." Literally said that. I said, "What are you talking about?" He was like, "You threw that can at me, man." I did not throw a can at him.

Noel Gallagher was studying one of my guitars, geeking out on it, and I could tell he was the serious one. Liam afterwards said, "You guys are shite, you'll never make it."

Third Eye Blind showed him! Also: a brief moment of appreciation for "I did not throw a can at him."

Maybe LG's behaviour seems excessive, but I would like to put it into context. This is a man who, at the height of his drug use (ie: the very time period during which he crossed paths with 3EB) believed in ghosts and thought that he was being surveilled by farm animals. So a brief threat of stabbing after the fact probably felt, at the time, like an appropriate response to an insulting Coke can being thrown at the self-made king of Britpop. Today, in big 2017, there is no way Liam Gallagher remembers saying this; I imagine at this point Liam Gallagher was probably making a lot of throwaway statements at anyone who he decided had pissed him off – including his brother.

For Third Eye Blind, it's kind of a shame that their big oral history got overshadowed by Liam Gallagher's ego, but really, that feels about right, doesn't it?
