Earl Sweatshirt's "WOAH" Is The Antithesis To Tyler's "Domo 23"

It's also pretty cool. Have you ever seen a guy eat ice cream with such pizzaz?

Earl Sweatshirt released a new song last night. If you didn’t already know, Earl is a rapper. A few years back he was appointed the young redeemer of rap by magazines and blogs who need to give a label to something to make it feel worth. I’m pretty sure a couple people still cream their pants every time he Tweets.

Anyway, the new song is called "Woah!" and you can watch the video for it above. Aside from giving all the Hypebeast teens a boner till the next Joey Bada$$ track gets released, it’s also pretty good.

Let’s take a look.

TYLER’S VOICE ON THE TRACK

You know what rap needs more of? Little voiceover interviews that explain shit to everyone. Back in 2006, these short little skits were unavoidable. Now, it’s all about getting a HD video shot quick enough to keep up with the buzz. Odd Future have hype (read: cash made from selling socks) for days, though. So, they can afford to be a little more creative with their videos, evidenced by both this and Tyler’s comeback short for "Domo 23" which brings me to my next point…

IT’S THE ANTI-THESIS TO ‘DOMO 23’

While Domo 23 came out like a charged up bull wanting to smack everyone in the face, "Woah|' slides on to the internet like a well lubricated MP3 should. It’s not trying to cause controversy, it’s just good music. It would be easy to suggest that Earl works as the polarising mount to Tyler’s ADHD personality. But, screw you. I’m going to go ahead and do it anyway.

IT’S NOT EARL 2

Do you ever get so obsessed over an artist that you’re scared they’re going to switch up their style and create something different? If so, you’re not a music fan. You're a creep. When Earl’s first mixtape came out, the whole world felt like adopted parents. Look at this new rapper, they typed. Isn’t he great!? Soon enough, people were screaming for him - “FREE Earl!” - they chanted, proving that within a crowd people will shout anything even if they don’t have a clue what they’re shouting about. As soon as Earl got back, people were hammering for new music like he owed them something. Instead, he took his time. When Earl took to Twitter to announce that the new record would be nothing like his debut, some people were bummed out. These people need to remember that Earl was super young when his first mixtape came out. If he released an identikit track it’d be like fucking the same girl since high school. No fun and super lame.

THEY’RE IN A TRAILER PARK

The last time I saw an artist in a trailer park was when Beyonce threw a party in one back in 2011. They need more recognition in the hip-hop world and thankfully Odd Future are bringing them the credit they deserve. Because, why shoot a boring video with weed smoke and nice cars when you can hang out in a trailer, ride bikes and float around in a murky pool all day, right? Right.

THE POOL

Which brings me to my next point. Have you ever seen the Slipknot video for "Left Behind"? Back in the day, I used to watch this bit in the video and think “mmm, chocolate milk”. The pool scene in this video is kind of the same. Except it involves sunglasses, a bucket hat, socks’n’sandals and a drink with a sippy straw which, ultimately, makes it better.

THAT PIANO RIFF INTERLUDE

Heaven.

LUCAS EATING AN ICE CREAM

Have you ever seen a guy eat ice cream with such pizzaz? Would you like him to advertise your brand of frozen milky stuff? Someone bang the table with a hammer because this guy just got sold.
