Madonna Does Not Approve of a Planned Madonna Biopic

"Nobody knows what I know and what I have seen. Only I can tell my story."

Earlier this week, news broke that Universal had picked up a screenplay titled Blond Ambition. It's due to chart Madonna's early career, her struggles as a woman in the music industry and her love life in the late 1970s and early 80s, after moving to New York from her home state of Michigan to Become a Star. The script is the debut by screenwriter Elyse Hollander, and topped last year's Black List (an industry ranking of Hollywood's most popular unproduced scripts), and the whole thing seems very much like it'll be a huge success! Excellent news, huh?

Well, that is until actual Madonna got hold of the story:

"Anyone else who tries is a charlatan and a fool." If this isn't the most iconic and most typically Madonna insult you have ever heard then I don't know what to tell you (and to be honest if Madonna called me a "charlatan and a fool" I would get business cards with it printed on and change my Twitter bio immediately). It seems that Madge was not consulted about Blond Ambition, which feels like kind of poor form from the studio, but her reaction – that is the ability to feel like 'I wasn't told there was going to be a film about me' to 'our society is diseased' is a logical jump – is a perfect encapsulation of why she is one of our most beloved stars of all time. However, I do kind of get the feeling that if Madonna were asked to play herself aged 18, with added digitised effects, it might be a different story. Which, fair play – only she can accurately tell her story, after all.
