A Texas Radio Station Has Banned Madonna Songs

Turns out they weren't fans of her “un-American” Women's March comments

Irony is a funny thing. It's like ra(iiii)in on your wedding day, according to 20th-century philosopher Alanis Morrissette. It's also kind of like Texas radio station HITS 105 banning all Madonna songs, (due to her "un-American" comments in defence of women's rights at the Women's March on Washington over the weekend). This, of course, is despite freedom of speech being a supposed cornerstone of US society, and indeed of the American right's entire defence of its own right to say whatever it likes while holding an enormous gun.

In a statement, HITS 105 said: "banning all Madonna songs at HITS 105 is not a matter of politics, it's a matter of patriotism. It just feels wrong to us to be playing Madonna songs and paying her royalties when the artist has shown un-American sentiments. If all stations playing Madonna took their lead from us, that would send a powerful economic message to Madonna." HITS 105 have, clearly, figured out that the key to stopping all protest, therefore, is by silencing Madonna. And yeah, though the audacity of this is comical, it's also important to remember it has also happened only a couple of days after the Trump administration temporarily banned social media activity by the National Parks Service, and the same day as Environmental Protection Agency staffers were barred from discussing their work with the press. Anyone would think that any anti-presidential sentiment is being *whisper it* censored. So today, it's probably a good idea for you to bump as much Madonna as possible. For resistance, yeah, but also for your soul. Follow Lauren on Twitter. (Image via YouTube)
