The UK National Anthem Probably Should Be a "Grime Banger," You Know

How does that old saying go? You wait ages for one Good Morning Britain-related news story and then two come along in the same week. Yes, the UK's favourite (and unfortunately, not only) Piers Morgan vehicle and news/lifestyle show has, this week, has provided two important music world events. The first was Big Narstie doing the weather. And the second was a a debate during which it was jokingly and quite iconically suggested that Wiley's "Wearing My Rolex" would be a better national anthem than the actual national anthem. We quite agree.

On Wednesday's programme, journalist Ash Sarkar was invited on to debate Tory MP Andrew Rosindell, a man who speaks every sentence as if he's memorised it for the school play, and an advocate for the proposed Conservative policy of teaching the national anthem – "God Save the Queen" – to children in schools. Sarkar argued that the song doesn't really represent everyone, with its references to God and the monarchy and all, noting "I just think it's not the catchiest of national anthems. I would much prefer 'Wearing My Rolex'… a grime banger"" Same, tbh.

Obviously this sent Piersy apoplectic with rage, neck all a-wobble ("YOU'D MUCH PREFER WHAT? WHAT DO YOU MEAN "WEARING MY ROLEX"?", like a dad who has stepped on some Lego except the Lego is an opinion – nay, an obvious joke – which does not slot in perfectly with his own boring views), and Ash was essentially shouted down, though not before she could admirably highlight another important British tradition that should be included in the national anthem: crisp sandwiches.

Anyway, the whole thing's batshit. She handled being confronted with a near-hysterical man with just the right amount of eyebrow raising, which frankly is also worth the Wiley shout-out alone. Watch it in a clip above, if for some reason you'd like to voluntarily expose yourself to footage of Piers Morgan. For what it's worth, we'd sign the Change.org petition for a grime national anthem.
