The New Age of Music Photography

The relation between images and music is complex; how can you accurately represent an artist’s music through an entirely different sensory medium?

In 1979, Pennie Smith – a young British photographer – was taking pictures of The Clash in the New York Palladium. Almost by chance, she took what became one of the defining images of rock ‘n’ roll: Paul Simonon bent double, smashing his guitar against the stage floor. The photo was used as the cover of London Calling, and is still instantly recognisable as a symbol of all that punk stands for.
