Thundercat Shares the Classic Gamer Struggle on "Friend Zone"

"I'd rather play Mortal Kombat, anyways."

It's a tale as old as time: dude gets really into playing video games, dude loses ability to socialize in any way beyond web forum flame wars, dude becomes kinda gross and unable to get girlfriends and gets sucked into the idea of "the friend zone" by his fellow geeks. This conditioned misogyny can lead to very dark places, but Thundercat tackles the concept lightly, as he always does, with "Friend Zone," another new track from his upcoming album Drunk .

The song's a typically limber electro-funk jam with Thundercat singing "no one wants to be in the friend zone," before saying he's just fine with Mortal Kombat, shouting out in-game fighter Johnny Cage. Where are the yacht rock collaborators? Is Thundercat truly in the friend zone? Why did the Mortal Kombat franchise let itself get bodied by Street Fighter? Ponder these questions as you groove to "Friend Zone" below.

Phil, as always, is more of a Soulcalibur guy. He's on Twitter.
