Taylor Swift Gave Vintage Swift on 'Fallon'

The simple performance of 'Reputation' track "New Year's Day" was a return to what we know.

Last Friday (November 10), Taylor Swift unleashed Reputation, her sixth album, unto the world. It hasn't received anywhere near the same critical reception as her last record, 2014's 1989, though sales have been typically outrageous, with reports circulating of it having sold 700,000 in its first day.

Over the weekend, Swift gave Reputation one of its first live outings on Saturday Night Live, and now she's taken to the late night circuit. Last night (November 13), she performed the album track "New Year's Day" on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, on Fallon's first show back following the death of his mother, Gloria. "New Year's Day" is vintage Swift to a far greater degree than any of Reputation's singles, harking back to Red with its rose-tinted memories and one-liners. Swift accompanied herself on piano, playing the track's Regina Spektor-esque riff with aplomb, though her vocal—as on SNL—felt shaky. You can see the performance above.
