Kevin Abstract’s “Runner” Video is the Best Teen Movie You’ve Never Seen

This is what happens when ‘Kids’ meets ‘Stand By Me’ meets 2017.

Sometimes musicians give us gifts, because they love us, their listeners. That is what Kevin Abstract, purveyor of one of 2016's most overlooked albums American Boyfriend: A Suburban Love Story and probable angel, has done today, in the shape of a music video for album cut "Runner."

Luckily for us, the clip looks exactly like Kevin Abstract songs sound: lush, brimming with teenage dreams, and heavy with atmosphere. It takes place (where else?) in the Californian neighbourhood of Van Nuys, suburbia weighing on it the same way it does with the rest of Abstract's work, and centres around the death of a local teen, Summer.

With an opening sequence which feels like if the kids from Kids dressed like they were in Stand By Me, a plot more engaging than most teen movies made in the past decade and a gravity-defying extended shot of Abstract duct-taped to the side of a car, I wish this was ten times longer than its seven-minute runtime, and feel strongly that I want Runner: The Movie immediately.
