M.I.A. Will Curate Meltdown Festival 2017

Previous leaders of the London event have included David Byrne, Patti Smith and Yoko Ono.

M.I.A. is many things: producer, artist, director, and most recently, occupant of the number 9 spot on Noisey's Greatest UK MCs of All Time list. Following up on that honour, she's about to add another heading to her impressive resumé: curator of Meltdown festival, which takes place annually at London's Southbank Centre. The event has previously been headed up by icons such as David Byrne, Patti Smith, Yoko Ono and Elvis Costello, and in a statement on her appointment, M.I.A. says that she hopes that her version of the event will redefine "the concept of a melting pot". She continues: "I plan to bring together music's best forward thinkers who have contributed to all our lives. When music acts as inspiration, it's boundary-less." Hear hear. This year's event will take place from 9 to 18 June, and we're looking forward to seeing who M.I.A. chooses to fill out the bill (as well as hoping she might fancy taking to the stage herself.)
