PREMIERE: Gwilym Gold - "Flex"

The mercurial Brit returns with a spectral new cut featuring Nico Muhly.

The other month team Noisey had a 10 minute conversation about the difference between flexing and fronting. Hey, such debates happen when you spend the majority of your waking hours with the same pals. I suppose London-based singer Gwilym Gold might be flexing with this track, but damn if it isn't the most elegant, understated flex ever committed to tape. It begins, barren, barely there, his gilded falsetto riding spectral and largely unacccompanied. "Flex" is gorgeously downtempo and not a tradtional song in the sense of verse chorus verse. Rather, it moves ever forward, adding layers at each stage till it's the kind of tune you want to free-fall into, as you would a pile of pillows after a long day.

Those who are aware of the mercurial, under-celebrated artist have come to expect nothing less than the non-traditional: this is a guy who once released a record—Tender Metal (2012)—specially tooled so that each listen is different from the one before. The song also features Nico Muhly on piano and the acclaimed classical composer contributes to four songs on Gold's upcoming debut LP proper, A Paradise, out on 8.21, via Brille Recordings.

"Flex was a bit of a benchmark for the record as a whole, one of the first started and last finished," says Gwilym. "I wanted it to have the feeling of a constant but sort of unrequited build to a climax."

"Flex" is out via Brille Records on 7.24.
