Stormzy Dropped Two New Songs, a Freestyle and a Slow Jams Mix on Beats 1 Radio Last Night

He also created a pretty sexual alter ego called Stiff Chocolate, who you kinda need to hear.

If you've not been listening to Beats 1 recently then, seriously, what the hell man? They had a Skepta special last week, and this weekend they have exclusive freestyles from Nas, Raekwon and Mobb Deep, plus The Pharmacy with Dre. Ezra Koenig's Time Crisis show is weird and dreamy, and Soulection episodes get deep, funky and technical. You need to be on this.

If you do listen to Beats 1, then you'll know London host Julie Adenuga has been taking a well-earned break this week, so a succession of famous mates have filed into the studio to take over hosting duties. Monday found Years & Years swapping compliments with Elton John, Tuesday saw Charli XCX debuting a barnstormer of a collab with PC Music’s SOPHIE, and Jamie Woon waltzed in on Wednesday to premiere "Movement" from his upcoming album.

No offence to any of the above, but yesterday the big guns came out to play as Stormzy marched into the studio, announcing his entrance with the world exclusive premiere of a new track called "Don’t Need", boasting rippling production and the man himself crooning in between bars. He hosted the show and lo and behold, it turns out Stormzy is the radio host-in-waiting that Gotham needs; a voice soothing as a lullaby coupled with Aziz Ansari levels of funny. We were even lucky enough to be graced by the presence of Stiff Chocolate, his silver-tongued alter-ego who is a master of the slow jam and dispenser of stellar dating advice.

"Yo, this is DJ Stiff Chocolate… Stormzy has left the building. Girls, if you’re sitting down, with your phone in your hand, text him. Just text him. I’ve got you," he instructed before listeners were hit with a mix so devastatingly smooth that hotlines everywhere were bound to be blinging before his first choice of Bryson Tiller had even finished. Then Usher was wheeled out and all bets were off. Listen to his full Slow Jams mix here.

Honestly, we’d have been content with an hour of solid Stiff Chocolate but there were other matters to attend to - like a phone call with grime godfather Lethal Bizzle to chat about their new link up, titled "Dude". Then Stormzy revealed himself to be a massive Daniel Bedingfield fan, just like all of us, by whacking on "If You’re Not The One" as a prime pick on his Motorway Jams section.

That wasn’t the end though. Wicked Skengman’s takeover turned out to be grime Christmas, as he blessed the mic with one of the fire freestyles that helped him make his name but also closed the show with ANOTHER premiere, this time a no-fucks-given reminder of why Stormzy’s not to be played with, called "Not The Same".

"Everyone’s tryna rush me out the building, maybe cause I badded up the show so much" he said as he wrapped up. Not a bit of it. I'd start a Change.org petition to get Stormzy a weekly Beats 1 hour right now if starting Change.org petitions for novelty causes was not the absolute WOAT.

Final treat, listen to his freestyle below:
