Why Does “Mad World” Played in a Major Key Sound Like a Jolly Dystopian Nightmare?

Guys. Guys I feel weird.

In this world there are objective truths. Dogs are good, bananas are bad (fight me). Another certain fact is that the most depressing song to ever exist is "Mad World" by Tears for Fears, later released by Gary Jules in 2003, when it inexplicably became the UK Christmas Number One. Festive.

"Mad World" is depressing for two very obvious reasons. The first is that the lyrics are a huge bummer ("the dreams in which I'm dying are the best I've ever had" – line from "Mad World" or someone's MSN screen name?), and the second is that its minor key piano is basically the sound of impending doom, and to listen to it is to allow existential dread to literally wash over you. Maybe that's what you're into though, I don't know,

Regardless of your, uh, preferences, however, you'd think that if the song were flipped, and the key changed from minor to major, that might be an improvement. Maybe it wouldn't make us all feel so creeped out and horrendous. You really would think that, wouldn't you? Well, wrong:

Obviously, as you now know, being played in a major key makes "Mad World" the most terrifying song ever conceived of, and you can thank YouTuber Yaog for all your future nightmares. He releases videos in a series called Will It Sad, where he takes happy songs and essentially turns them into heartbreaking ballads. He took a different tack for "Mad World," whereby he attempted to "Will It Happy." I would like Yaog to know that he has gone a shade too far. This sounds like the music that would be playing if you got knocked out and woke up in some kind of Stepford Wives-style alternate reality which seems kind of normal except actually everyone including you has had a lobotomy, and they are singing this while staring at you, and in this manner it is absolutely chilling.

Have fun trying to get it out of your head, and have a great day :-)
