Grab life by the joysticks and take in the Toronto rapper's new psych-trap effort.

You might remember $ha Hustle from his video for “3= (Threesome)” or his appearance on “Murda” with Roy Wood$ and Dej Loaf. But now the Toronto rapper is going simply as $ha, and he’s got a full-length project of his own: GTA6: Live From The Underground. Recorded entirely at his home with producer BatmanOnTheBeatz, $ha describes the creation of the project as an up-and-down process. “We went through recording a bunch of songs, taking some out, re-making stuff,” $ha explains. “We’re both on this experimental, futuristic sound and that’s all we wanna do; just create new sounds and make good music.”

The mixtape combines $ha’s psychedelic rock influences with traditional trap sonics to create a smoky, nostalgic vibe. “I’m into Alice Cooper and Jimi Hendrix and I try to put that together with trap and 808s.” $ha compares the mixtape to a movie. “It might scare you,” he says laughing. “It might scare you, but it’s entertainment man and I’m an entertainer.” Songs like “Range” feature the rapper chanting menacingly over a dark ambient beat while the airy instrumentals of “Light It Up” blend pleasantly with $ha’s ability to craft catchy hooks.
