PREMIERE: Hey Mother Death's Video for "Highway" Will Scare You Off the Road

It's probably best to stay off the road after watching Hey Mother Death's 'Highway'.

Life is a highway. But if Halifax duo, Hey Mother Death and their new video for "Highway" are to be believed, there’s no escape. Off their debut album of the same name, Hey Mother Death’s unique blend of French/English spoken word and minimalist sounds worm through the video as we find a well dressed and presumably dead couple lying by the road. What follows is a weird collage of people enjoying life on a picnic mat and running through an abandoned field. Although we’re sure there’s a narrative here, the underwater POV shots and sun tinged filter are too pretty to be ignored.

“When the band sent me their vision about life and the meaning of “Highway” I knew it was going to be special" says director JF Julian. "The band arrived at my cottage on a warm summer day in the south of France and we spent the next 10 days living together, shooting, and re-writing. I took out all the "things" that makes sense in a "normal" film production, this mean no digital photography, no light, no make up, no traveling crane and so on. I felt the music was raw and genuine and that those ideas had to match with my images so I shot handheld; relying on the same skills and instincts the band used when they made the track.”

Hey Mother Death's debut, Highway arrives July 7th on Paper Bag Records.
