After the euphoric but ultimately bittersweet "Get Out," it was hard to know where CHVRCHES would go next. Happily, they've done something great and brilliantly unexpected by collaborating with The National's Matt Berninger for their second single of their current run, "My Enemy."

Of collaborating with Berninger, CHVRCHES vocalist Lauren Mayberry said:

We've all been huge fans of The National for a long time. We had played a few festivals together but really got to know Matt when we were involved in 7 Inches For Planned Parenthood, a fundraising and awareness campaign that he spearheaded. It's really inspiring and reassuring to meet other artists you admire and realize that they are trying to do some good in the world. We kept in touch after that and, when it came time to record "My Enemy," Iain and Martin suggested I email Matt to see if he'd like to sing on it. We never realistically thought he'd have time to do it but he replied right away and recorded the track at his house the next day.

"My Enemy" premiered on Zane Lowe's Beats 1 show as today's World Record, and now it's out on all the usual platforms. It's airy, light, and more downbeat than its predecessor, and is especially significant as a different sonic landscape from the sort that we're used to from Berninger, who for the record, sounds great here. Even better, it's the sign of things to come, as the band have now officially announced their third album, Love Is Dead, which will be released on May 25.

In vocalist Mayberry's words, the record is about "coming to terms with the fact that there are great things in the world and there are awful things in the world and that you can’t get one without the other." Here's to a whole album of wall-to-wall sad-pop bangers, arriving just in time to soundtrack all your summer heartaches.
