Freak Heat Waves' "Self Vortex" Is a Trance You Want to Fall Into

The Montreal band's new single is post-punk via Houston rap instead of Mancunian rock.

Montreal post punk sludgemeisters Freak Heat Waves haven't released an album since 2015's Bonnie's State of Mind, but they'll be returning with a new LP called Beyond XXXL on April 6. We have the first single, a whirlpool of bad vibes guitars and creeping bass appropriately called "Self Vortex." The band touts DJ Screw as an influence here, and the slowed-down vocals, repeating synth line, and overall hypnotic churn of the track pay clever tribute to the late Houston rap trailblazer.
