Speedy Ortiz Return with the Slimy, Apathetic Anxiety of "Lucky 88"

The Boston rockers' first new album in three years, 'Twerp Verse,' is out on April 27.

Speedy Ortiz are at last coming back with a new record this year following 2015's great Foil Deer and frontdemon Sadie Dupuis' equally stellar 2016 solo album Slugger. Twerp Verse is due for an April 27 release, and the band has shared the video for first single "Lucky 88" via NPR.

The song itself veers out of Speedy's crunchy, knotted guitar jams to venture into cleaner pop as Dupuis expresses both anxiety and apathy about the many woes of the late-aughts: Tinder, post-truth politics, the usual business. The nightmarish accompanying clip is directed by Vulture film critic Emily Yoshida and uses an ever-growing pile of green sludge to symbolize those daily horrors. Watch the "Lucky 88" video above.
