The Shins Get Silly and Trippy on New Song "Painting a Hole"

James Mercer goes 'Sgt. Pepper' on us.

The Shins have had psychedelic rock in their veins since Oh, Inverted World birthed a thousand LiveJournal anthems. Just check the spacey outro of "Past and Pending." While they became more earthbound just before and after the band's restructuring, the hallucinatory artwork for their upcoming Heartworms album is just one sign of their return to psych, the other being "Painting a Hole," which they've just shared today.

With fuzz bass and random Farfisa organ noodles swirling around, the song's a far cry from the polite folk-rock James Mercer and co. are known for. The frontman himself has his vocals coated in delay and overdubs, too. You can listen to "Painting a Hole" below.
