Alex Winston Hangs with Some Senior Citizens In Her Video for "Careless"

Leave your inhibitions at the door would ya?

Last night Team Noisey went to see Alex Winston in a penthouse overlooking NYC—which was cool because the city looked all hazy in the magic hour—but what was really rad was Ms. Winston herself. A petite dynamo of a performer, even the tiny dog in the arms of one audience member was moved by her energetic renditions of lilting oldie "Sister Wife" and tantalizing new cuts from her forthcoming album—out on 300 Entertainment this falllike the spangly 80s pop "The Day I Died." Not gonna lie, during the power ballad, "Down Low," I shed exactly two tears, such is her emoto-sonic vortex. She should hand out tissues during that slowie.

This morning the Michigan-born singer dropped her video for "Careless" which sees Winston lounging in a pool and generally hanging with a bunch of old folks. I thought, well that's a bit weird, this song feels like it's all about being reckless and carefree. Overthinking is ever so dull. How come history makes us meek? With that in mind we got in touch with Winston to get a few answers…

Noisey: What attracted you to this video concept and how does it relate to the song?
Alex Winston: Director Allie [Avital Tsypin] and I came up with the idea together. It helps that we have pretty similar taste. The song is about wanting to feel excitement and feel alive. We all want to be uninhibited sometimes. I wanted something honest and eerie without a narrative so you can take what you want from it. Are you keen to present cohesive visuals for this album and it's upcoming videos or are you treating each video as an art project as it comes?
I'm the least cohesive person I know. Everyone tells me to streamline, but I like what I like and I'm OK with not everything making sense together. What was it like hanging with all the old folks?
I love being around older people… they generally have way better things to say. One gentleman told me to eat my vegetables! Also, Don (the solo dancer at the end) is a total dream boat. All the girls were swooning over Don. What can you tell us about the forthcoming LP?
Its extremely personal, which is a new for me. I generally tend to write about other people, but I've had a pretty transitional few years and the whole process was very therapeutic for me.
