Tune in Sunday for Episode 16 of VICE on Beats 1
We talk to the director of a documentary on soul legend Syl Johnson and speak to LA producer Softest Hard about the women of EDM.
If it's the weekend, that means it's time for VICE on Beats 1 radio. Episode sixteen of our weekly show on the Apple Music flagship station premieres Sunday, October 18th, opening with a megamix comprising music from Chance the Rapper, whose recent Kanye West cover presents a case for why hip-hop artists should revisit each other's work more and ex-Promise Ring singer/guitarist Davey von Bohlen Maritime, who just released new album Magnetic Bodies/Maps of Bones this week, along with premieres from Toronto rapper ShaqIsDope and French DJ/producer Canblaster.
After the mix, we'll sit with Robert Hatch-Miller, director of the new documentary Syl Johnson: Any Way the Wind Blows, which chronicles the life and legacy of the Mississippi soul singer, whose underrated body of work found new life in the hip-hop era as everyone from Wu-Tang Clan to Jay Z and Kanye West sampled his records, oftentimes to his dismay. Episode 16's final segment is an interview with LA producer Angel Pham, ala Softest Hard, about the unsung women of EDM's boy's club and some of the new music she's working on.
