Adele Wins Every Single Grammy She Was Nominated For, Shocks Us All

She continues on her mission to single-handedly prop up the British recording industry.

Unlike queen of hearts Adele to overachieve isn't it? Not one for walking out of awards ceremonies clutching a bouquet of trophies is she? That would be so strange and out of character.  Breaking the habit of a lifetime, last night Tottenham's favourite daughter left LA's Staples Centre with five more Grammys to her name (taking her career total to 15): she took away the accolades for Best Pop Vocal Performance, Record of the Year and Song of the Year for "Hello," and Best Pop Vocal Album and the coveted Album of the Year award for 25. All in a night's work really innit? This makes her the first person to win Record of the Year, Album of the Year, and Song of the Year twice, according to the Recording Academy. However, during her acceptance speech for Album of the Year, even she acknowledged that her album was probably not the deserving winner, and noted the Lemonade shaped-elephant in the room. In as many tears as any human might expect to be when addressing Beyoncé directly, Adele said:

"I can't possibly accept this award. And I'm very humbled, and I'm very grateful, and gracious. But, my artist of my life is Beyoncé, and this album for me, the "Lemonade" album, was just so monumental. And so well thought out, and so beautiful and soul-baring. And we all got to see another side to you that you don't always let us see, and we appreciate that. All us artists here adore you. You are our light. And the way that you make me and my friends feel – the way you make my black friends feel is empowering. And you make them stand up for themselves. And I love you. I always have, and I always will."

In honour of the moment, and in a piece of frankly hilarious irreverence for the Grammys, she later broke her award in half Mean Girls prom style and gifted it to Bey. And between this special shoutout and stopping her George Michael tribute to restart after technical difficulties, the night was pretty much all about her. Which is not at all what she's used to.  Follow Lauren on Twitter. (Image via Variety on Twitter)
